Harp Concerts and Workshops at our Store in Glendale, California

Coming to a concert at the Sylvia Woods Harp Center is a magical experience. We bring in the best harp players from the U.S., Canada, and Europe to enthrall and entertain you. To accommodate 80 seats, we move all of our harps into our mail order room. Because of our small and intimate setting, even people in the back row are not very far from the performers. Almost all of our performances are strictly acoustic, with no microphones or amps needed.
Some of the performers we have presented in the past include: Patrick Ball, Robin Huw Bowen (from Wales), Maire ni Chathasaigh (from Ireland), Deborah Friou, Grainne Hambly (from ireland), Margot Krimmel and Beth Leachman, William Jackson (from Scotland), The Glorian Duo, Harvi Griffin, Deborah Henson-Conant, Sue Hoadley, Loreena McKennitt (from Canada), Alfredo Rolando Ortiz, Laurie Riley and Michael McBean, Kim Robertson, Paul Baker and Ellie Choate, Park Stickney and Rudiger Oppermann, and, of course, Sylvia Woods.

PLEASE NOTE: Concert tickets are non-refundable. Thank you.

Paul Baker & Ellie Choate

Together these two outstanding harpists (and good friends) are a blast! Don't miss what promises to be a fun and unpredictable evening of jazz, classical and popular music on two pedal harps.

Paul Baker received a Bachelor of Music from Seattle Pacific University and a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance and Accompanying from the University of So. Calif. He was principal harpist with the Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra, the Peninsula Symphony, the Marina Del Rey-Westchester Orchestra, the Burbank Chamber Orchestra and has played with the Pacific Symphony, Opera Pacific Orchestra, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Pantages Theatre and the American Ballet Theater Orchestra. Paul is a two-time winner in the International Pop and Jazz competitions. In 1995 he was chosen Los Angeles' "Music Director of the Year."

Ellie Choate took her Bachelors at CSU Fresno CA, and Masters in Harp Performance at CSU Long Beach CA.  Ellie is currently the Pacific Regional Director of the American Harp Society. In addition to her performance schedule, Ellie is on the adjunct applied music faculty at University College, Irvine, California. Ellie is a regular performer with the Welsh Choir of Southern California.

Robin Huw Bowen

Robin Huw Bowen in Concert
Saturday, May 5, 2007 at 8:00 p.m.

We are thrilled to have Robin back again!  Robin is a master of the Welsh Triple Harp and a proponent of all things Welsh.  With a degree in Welsh language and literature, he has a wealth of information about the history, music and culture of Wales, and loves to impart this knowledge to his audiences.  But this is no dry and boring concert - Robin is a hoot!  Robin doesn’t get to the Harp Center often, so don’t miss this chance to see and hear a brilliant and engaging harper!

The Welsh Triple Harp is truly a unique instrument. Standing approximately six feet tall, the triple harp has three rows of strings. The outer two rows are tuned in unison (like the white keys on the piano) while the third, inner row of strings, is tuned to provide the accidentals (like the black keys on the piano). This arrangement of strings makes the triple harp a difficult instrument to play, but it gives the harp a distinctive sound and allows for more chromatic playing than a lever harp.
