I should clarify one thing before I begin. The small harp referred to in the title means a traditional Scottish harp, about 36 strings, not a lap harp. Though many songs are playable on a lap harp, many are not and will take some adapting to play on a smaller harp. That said, I learned a lot from Alison Kinnaird. After a brief introduction to the harp, she begins with simple tunes and exercizes. And she starts the student on two hands right away! Bravo! Starting on two hands so soon kept me from being afraid of the bass clef. Kinnaird's taste in music is excellent, we are treated to a selection of traditional Scottish pieces and original compositions. Most, but not all, are played on the accompanying CD. The second half of the book is dedicated to traditional Scottish playing, arranging and ornamentation. I highly recommend this book to students who love Scottish music, who want to learn traditional playing styles or who just want a fun, challenging book that does not talk down to them. This book, along with Sylvia Woods's "Teach Yourself the Folk Harp" will give a beginning playing an impressive collection of songs and information. Not to be missed.
