This haunting piece by the 20th century American composer Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000) suits the harp perfectly. The right hand weaves an oriental-sounding melody while the left hand accompanies it with single notes and rolled chords. 4 pages with pedal markings. Intermediate pedal harp. For PEDAL harp only.
"Music for the unconscious mind," "melodic," "spiritual," "ornate," "simple" are words that some use to describe the works of Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000), an intriuging "outsider" of 20th century classical music. His purpose was to compose, in his own words, "not for snobs, but for all people, music which is beautiful and healing, to attempt what old Chinese painters called 'spirit resonance' in melody and sound." Much of his music drew from Indian and Chinese influence, demonstrating his fresh and distinctive style that has only recently begun to be widely performed and studied. We are fortunate that a handful of his works include harp, including two solos.
