A Scottish Island was commissioned by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and premiered at Glasgow's Mayfest in 1996. This is a spectacular piece of music, featuring classical woodwinds and strings playing alongside Highland bagpipes, fiddles, tin whistles and the clarsach, or Scottish harp. From the stirring, windswept feeling of Crossing the Sound to the gently haunting Call of the Silkie, to the majesty of A Jewel in the Ocean, A Scottish Island is a gorgeous musical portrait of the variety to be found in Scotland's Western Isles. Also on this CD is William's suite A Journey by Sea, which he wrote as a tribute to and fond remembrance of his many years traveling throughout the Western Isles. It begins with the peacefulness of Iona, an island sacred to Christianity and treated with great reverence here, and ends with the almost calypso-like Jura, describing a wild, last-minute run for the ferry.
