arranged for beginning and advanced harpers

Book
This multi-level book by Sylvia Woods contains 40 tunes by O'Carolan (1670-1738), the most famous of the Irish harper/composers. These tunes are perfect for weddings and other occasions. Each piece has two arrangements: an easy version, and one that is more difficult. The pieces are fingered and are in the key of C or sharp keys, with chord symbols. 112 pages, spiral-bound.

Companion CD or Cassette
The companion CD or cassette will assist harp players learning the pieces in this book. Since many of you will want to “play along” as you are learning, Sylvia has recorded most of the pieces slower than they are usually played, and as “straight” as possible, with little or no expression or rhythmic variations. Most people find the CD easier to use than the cassette, because you can go directly to a specific track.
In the book each piece has two arrangements: (A) an easy version, and (B) one that is more difficult. On these recordings Sylvia plays the “B” versions. Since the two versions can be played as a duet, you can play either version along with the recording. The pieces are in the same order as in the book. .
The prices of the “Book and CD” or “Book and Cassette” sets listed above are $2 off the price of the products if purchased separately.

Always Useful and Always Enjoyable 01/10/2008 - by Mary Jane Ballou from St Augustine, FL US
I've bought many books of Irish music and have many different arrangements of Carolan tunes in my library, but this is the book I always come back to. This is the book that I throw in my bag along to take along to gigs "just in case." When I was a beginner, I labored over the simple arrangements. Now many of Sylvia's ideas are a jumping-off point for my own approach to these tunes. The fingerings are sound and a wonderful way to learn how to finger harp music when you're getting started. The music clear, easy to read, and because the arrangements are not extended, there are no hideous page turns.

I have a raft of Sylvia Woods' books, but this one will always be cloest to my heart. And who would have thought that? Especially since I told my first teacher that I didn't "particularly care for Irish music." Little did I know what Irish music could be.
One of My Favorites 11/01/2007 - by Carol S. Tillman from Sunnyvale, CA US
This is the first book of harp music that I ever purchased, and it remains one of my favorites. I bought it in college because I enjoyed Patrick Ball's CDs of Turlogh O'Carolan's music. At that time, I didn't play the harp, but I was determined to learn some day. Now, years later, several songs in this book have become a part of my standard repertoire. Some of my particular favorites are Carolan's Welcome, Lady Gethin, Morgan Magan, and Carolan's Quarrel with the Landlady.
