This delightful collectible pin of Rupert Bear playing a harp was issued by the London Police Federation as a charity badge in the mid-1990s. Rupert is wearing a policeman’s hat along with his red jumper and yellow plaid scarf. The pin is about 3/4" tall and has a tie-tack, butterfly fastening.
Rupert Bear is a popular English cartoon character who has appeared in the Daily Express newspaper since his creation in 1920 by artist Mary Tourtel. In the early 1980s, the series of Police Rupert pin badges was started as a charity fundraiser to enable the children of officers of the Royal Ulster Constabulary in Northern Ireland to have a holiday on the mainland away from all the troubles. The original purchase funds went to the charity.
