For lever or pedal harp.

Harpation is a trilogy of intermediate solo harp pieces based on a whole-tone scale. They can also be used with harp duets or ensembles. In addition to being interesting selections for pleasure or performance, these pieces teach students contemporary harp techniques in an enjoyable way. Effects include arpeggio, bisbigliando, effleurer, fingernail, glissando, glisser, harmonics, kloster, laisser vibrer (L.V.), pres de la table, tympanic sound, and xylophone sound. There are explanations of how to create the various effects. Some fingerings are included.

Each piece is included in this PDF in two tuning versions, E-flat major (3-flats) and C major, in order to accommodate the most common tunings used by folk harpers. (Harpers who tune in B-flat may also use the E-flat version.) Pedal harpists may use either tuning, although E-flat is recommended for a richer sound.

These pieces can make an interesting duet if two harps alternate some measures (or sections) in a kind of echo effect. In addition, an ensemble of harpers or harpists may play the entire trilogy simultaneously. The total range required to play all pieces (in both keys) is four and one-half octaves, from low C to high G (33 strings). The PDF is 30 pages long.

The three pieces are:
Kymation ("ribbon-shaped ornament") - An oriental mood is woven into the construction of this piece.
Luxation ("dislocated") - The recurring 5/4 time signature gives a disjointed feel to the music.
Vexation ("disquieted") - This piece, in the style of a Celtic-flavored Siciliano, invokes restlessness.
