The Silver String CD and DVD by Alison Kinnaird
This long-awaited recording features Alison Kinnaird on gut and wire strung harps and cello. Alison is one of the most influential Scottish harpists, and is a master of both types of harps. Her research into the history of the harp in her country has greatly expanded the repertoire and understanding of the harp. On some of the 13 tracks of this CD of traditional Scottish music she is also joined by Ann Heyman (on wire-strung harp) as well as Charlie Heymann, Alasdair White, Mike Katz, Christine Primrose and Robin Morton on other traditional instruments.
A special treat is also included in this package: a free DVD featuring 3 short films relating to Alison`s music and the other side of her artistic endeavor as a glass artist. Alison has always had two careers running parallel, as a well-known Scottish musician, but also as an artist in glass, whose work is collected internationally. In 1997, the Queen awarded her an M.B.E. for services to art and music. Usually, Alison keeps both activities separate, but in a number of projects both glass and the harp have featured together. On this DVD, Alison introduces 3 short films by Robin Morton, which show the relationship between the two arts. You'll see and hear Alison discussing her music and how she creates her glass art. (You can see some examples of her glass art on the cover of the CD above.) The 3 films feature both Alison's music and her artworks, and are entitled "Psalmsong," "Ayrshire Lasses & Dance of the Dead," and "Ring of Crystal, Ring of Stone."
