Phil Hayden is a composer of vocal, choral and harp music who discovered the joy of playing harp and its delightful possibilities for composing a few years ago. A native of New York, Phil graduated from Westminster Choir College summa cum laude, and received his Masters Degree in Music Theory and Composition from Eastern Kentucky University. At EKU he won the Orchestral Composition Contest. In 2022 he won the Ithaca College 42nd annual Robert Campbell Endowed Choral Composition Prize. Phil has current choral music published by Hal Leonard, and his harp music exclusively with Seraphim Music.
Early in his career Phil taught high school vocal music, followed by college teaching overseas, first in Medellin, Colombia, then in Taiwan, ROC. Phil taught music theory related subjects and conducting, and directed choral ensembles. He took the first known set of handbells to Colombia, where his university handbell choir still presents concerts. Recently retired, Phil has spent the past thirty years in full-time church music ministry in Raleigh, NC, where he and his wife still reside. They are the proud parents of four grown children.
