Here's how Sylvia describes the various versions in this collection:
You may wonder why I wrote this book in two parts, with the first half in the Key of D, and the second in the Key of G. The original key for this Canon was D. However, on many lever harps it sounds much better in the key of G. Another reason for the two keys is to accommodate harps with various ranges. For example, in the Key of D the "Easy Harp Solo" can be played on a small harp with a range of only one octave below middle C, and the "Advanced" versions need two octaves below middle C. In the Key of G, all the arrangements need a harp with a range going down 1-1/2 octaves below middle C, to the G that is the bottom line on the bass staff. Sharping lever changes for lever (non-pedal) harp players are indicated between the treble and bass clef staves. Pedal changes for pedal harpists are indicated below the bass clef.

Companion CD or mp3 downloads

On the Companion CD or mp3 downloads Sylvia Woods plays most of the arrangements in her Pachelbel's Canon and Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring publications.
The purpose of these recordings is to assist harp players in learning these pieces. Since many players will want to "play along" with the CD as they are learning, Sylvia has recorded them slower than they are usually played, and as "straight" as possible, with little or no expression or rhythmic variations. The Canon was recorded at a metronome marking of 92, and Jesu at 100. In all of the duet versions, one harp part is on one track of the stereo, and the second harp part (or the flute part) is on the other. If your CD player or your speakers allow you to turn down one channel, you can play along hearing just one part.
The three versions of the Canon are played first in the original key of D, and then in the key of G. You can play the Advanced Harp Solo along with the Easy Harp Solo on the CD. The flute player took some liberties with which octave the notes are played, to fit into the range of the flute.
None of the versions of Jesu include the repeat, they go straight to the second ending. You can play the Pedal Harp Solo version of Jesu along with either duet version on the CD.

All of the arrangements provided are lovely. As an intermediate player, I can manage both the "easy" and "advanced" solo arrangements included; having played it many times, the easier one has become quite leisurely to me at this point, while the more advanced version still leaves me a little flustered, if you know what I mean. My sister (a flautist) and I sometimes play the duet version together; it's a fairly simple arrangement, but it seems to make people swoon, as I suppose Canon in D always tends to do. Definitely a must-have for the lever harpist.

Did he write anything else we remember? Sylvia has taken the time to set down various versions of the Canon in D that you can play around with. If you need to learn it in a hurry, as I did, simply work with the first one. Totally perfect for weddings, wine tastings, visits to the elderly.

I have only been taking harp for less than a year and a half, but I wanted a challenge. I didn't start right into the intermediate solo arrangement of Canon in D; instead I slowly worked up to the beginner solo version. Then the transition to the harder one was easier. I can now play both with ease. It was also very enjoyable, once I figured out the advanced Canon in D solo, to play Sylvia's arrangements of Canon in G. I have played these arrangements both on my Lyon & Healy Ogden and on my teacher's pedal harp. They sound lovely on both; whether you are a harper or a harpist, you will really enjoy these wonderful arrangements."

This version of the all-time classic Pachelbel's Canon is truly great - with different versions in level(easy, advanced)or key (D,G). I love to play it, and thanks to the detailed fingerings I learned it very quickly. I can only recommend this beautiful piece - especially for people who are playing at weddings.

I love the different levels of difficulty! It's great to have options depending on your ability, the time you have, and the size of your harp. The arrangements were gorgeous!
